Something of a legend in the Giro, this climb was described by Lance Armstrong as the hardest he’d ever ridden. It’s probably why he never visited the Giro often. 12.4 kilometres in length, climbing 1300 metres with an average percentage of 10.5% maxing out at 18% the Mortirolo has become something of a monument to Marco Pantani. The climb was first used in 1990 and in 1994 the climbing legend was first over the top. Now, a statue to him is awaiting anyone who makes the summit.
