Eric Vanderaerden was the greatest talent to come out of Belgium since Eddy Merckx. In some ways his career never seemed to fulfil its potential, but then the pressure on any cyclist from Belgium is immense. Eric was a fabulous time-trialist and sprinter, winning the Tour de France prologue and wearing the yellow jersey for two days in his first year – 1983. In 1984 he won the prestigious final stage on the Champ Elysees, whilst in 1986 he won the green jersey. He also won the Tour of Flanders 1985 before winning Paris Roubaix in 1987.
