Watching Chris Froome, Contador, Nibali, Kelderman and Talansky slugging it out up the final climb of the Col du Beal in yesterdays stage two of the Dauphine was really special. Nothing was held back, here were the three main contenders for the Tour de France smashing each other and going firmly into the red zone.
Froome went on the attack several times demonstrating his unbelieveable leg cadence on a climb, what was more impressive though was Contador matching him pedal stroke, for stroke – even if he couldn’t get past him at the finish.
This makes the 2014 Tour even more mouth-watering.
Last year we were treated to the Chris Froome electric leg cadence on Mont Ventoux, where for a while it looked like he was stuck in bottom gear and forced to race on. On that occasion, no-one (including Contador) could match him – although the early signs are that this July things are going to be a little tougher for Chris, however fast he turns his legs.
